ABOUT US

Located in Auckland, Roskill-Eden Hockey Club is a community based and family orientated club. The families of the Sutton's, Chester's and Teixeira's have been involved in the club since the merger in 1957 and continue to be involved, with representatives from all of these families on the current Executive of the club. A number of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the original club members play in various teams from junior and youth to senior premier teams.

The club currently has 8 senior teams, 2 youth girl's teams, a youth boy's team and 12 junior teams, and with the work of volunteers we are hoping to keep growing the club and getting more of the community involved in bringing family and friends along to enjoy the sport of hockey.

Our home turf is located on Somerset Road in Mt Roskill Grammar School where training for all teams are held weekly throughout the winter season.

CLUB HISTORY

Roskill-Eden has a long history. The club took its current form in 1959 when it was registered as an incorporated society. The amalgamation of the Community Sunshine Association with the Mt Eden Hockey Club took place in 1957. The club was registered with the Auckland Hockey Association as Eden-Roskill. The following season Mt Albert Ramblers were winding up and that club had a senior team, so Eden-Roskill took over the playing side of Mt Albert Ramblers, becoming Roskill Ramblers. The arrangement did not work out and so a new constitution was written in 1959, by Eric McKenzie and Bert Potter (one of our more colourful ex-members), which lasted for 30 years. At that stage the club had four men’s and six women’s teams.

The foundations of Roskill-Eden were laid much earlier with the formation of the Mt Eden Hockey Club in 1909 (not to be confused with the current Mt Eden which was formed as a women's club in 1917). The oldest minutes we have are for a meeting dated 4 March 1910.

The minute book in which they are written provides interesting insights of the club from 1910 until 1938.

Senior status was lost sometime before 1957. For the men it took ten more years to regain it, with senior status being won in 1966 by winning the second grade championship. The women won senior status in 1977. The premier teams have been competitive since then.

Roskill-Eden is a community based and family orientated club. The families of the Sutton's, Chester's and Teixeira's have been involved in the club since the merger in 1957, and continue to be involved, with representatives from all of these families on the current Executive of the club. The fact that the club has survived is a credit to the members and administrators over a very long period of time. We look forward to continuing to be a member of the Auckland Hockey community.
